In the mid and late 19th century, the American poet John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892) was one of the most famous men in America. Statesman, ardent abolitionist, poet of the first rank – schools closed on his birthday, streets across America were named in his honor, and his poems were read and memorized throughout America and much of the English-speaking world.

In early 2006, we released Volume 1, "Snow-Bound" of the Whittier Bicentennial Recording Project, which featured a single poem...Whittier's masterpiece, "Snow-Bound."

We are now pleased to announce the release of Volume 2, "Barbara Frietchie & Other Poems" This volume features many of Whittier's most beloved poems, including "The Pressed Gentian," "Burning Driftwood," and others...all read by Michael Maglaras.

Just as we incorporated the music of Charles Ives into our recording of "Snow-Bound," Volume 2 employs the music of Mendelssohn, Goosens, Vaughan Williams, and the wonderful American composer Morton Feldman.
